Our school made a visit to the former displaced persons camp at ‘Windfield’, where Wojtek the-soldier-bear and his fellow soldiers were stationed at the end of World War II. The children learned all about the Syrian bear named by Polish soldiers as ‘Wojtek’; his fellow comrades-in-arms. Wojtek became famous at the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy, by carrying heavy ammunition boxes for Polish artillerymen under fire from German troops. After the war, the bear spent its last years at Edinburgh Zoo, but Wojtek became a symbol of freedom and solidarity for Poles all over the world.
